May Event Log #2
๐Ÿœ™ Seyra's Serenade
Across most of Idan spring is in full bloom. With spring has come a swathe of new growth overtaking the land and painting it a rainbow of colors. The farmlands are alive with life and the wild and open lands are full of young baby creatures frolicking in and out of bushes, tall grasslands, and trees. Centaurs have come out from their hidden villages to watch over the open lands and the young folk of the various races are celebrating their vacation from academies or apprenticeships by holding sporting competitions, races through the city streets, or sneaking into taverns and other areas of the cities or off into the wildlands and generally getting up to mischief.

During the peak blooming season of spring comes Seyra's Serenade, a day used by the people of Idan to celebrate the speckled doe goddess. As the goddess of growth and healing, she is seen across Idan as one of the benevolent deities and affectionately referred to as the mother of the stars. During Seyra's Serenade the three cities and the lands between them are surrounded and filled with floral growth that is used in the Festival of Flowers. Largely seen as a children's festival, the young ones gather the flowers and decorated their homes and the city streets, rivers, bay, and ledges with flower chains, floral graffiti, and petals.

Hunting is severely limited for the month in honor of Seyra and to respect the growth of all young creatures just entering the world. Diets are adjusted to a focus of fruits, vegetables, and grains, and the taverns help the older population celebrate 'healing' by offering floral wines, vodkas, and gins, as well as amaretto-based drinks.

Powerful wild guardian creatures wake from their winter slumber and can be glimpsed moving slowly through the forests or out in the plains. Most of them look like creatures found in their respective homes, but much larger and with elements of the wild land about them. They are slow and docile but very powerful. They can be killed and their pelts or bones sell for very high value in the black market, but they are protected creatures and killing them will have consequences.

Hunting during the month of May is not explicitly forbidden but is strongly discouraged by the three cities. Injuring young creatures or killing the parents of young creatures is a sure way to draw Seyra's ire during May and find oneself cursed by the Mother of Stars. Those who hunt creatures under Seyra's protection are afflicted by a curse known as Hunter's Remorse, a curse that usually only affects those who kill unicorns and is designed to cripple poachers, hunters, and predators. The curse forces the afflicted to feel a crippling and powerful empathy, especially towards the suffering of the world and the animals living in it. Hunter's Remorse is not widely believed to be a real affliction and most of Idan's population write it off as a cautionary tale and a fictional curse.

๐Ÿœ™ The Huntress
A new creature has been sighted in the swamps, patrolling the paths and stealing hunters' injured prey from them. It's said to be fast and silent, able to blend into the swamp despite its unusual coloration. A group of hunters from Didymos have put a hefty bounty on the creature.

They say it is large and covered in a mix of scales and fur. It is quick, moves soundlessly through the swamp and by their description looks like a lion, a zebra, and a monitor lizard all rolled into one. They never see it coming but its hide is too thick for arrows to penetrate and they haven't been able to get close enough to hit it with other weapons.

If you bring back its hide they'll pay in gold, but you'll have to find it for yourself. That means risking the other dangers of the swamp: sinking pits, venomous snakes, carnivorous plants, predators of the land and water, and ornery elementals. They think its nest is somewhere in the Swamp of Lost Souls.

Attempting to track down the creature can either lead to the creature itself, or its nest. Astute trackers will find there are more than one of these strange-looking creatures in the swamp, but only one of them matches the full description given by the hunters and she is much larger and leaner than the smaller members of her pack. The hunters will likely be unable to tell the difference. They appear to be amphibious and capable of camouflage. They are quick and silent in both the water and on land. Their furry manes are actually whiskers that help them sense vibrations and shifts in water or air currents.

The creatures are not aggressive toward people unless cornered or attacked but they are territorial of the shoreline and the larger one will grab any wounded animals attacked in the swamplands and disappear with them. Their hides are dense and thick, reflecting or shielding them from most attacks other than those that would pierce metal armor and they do seem to possess earth magic focused around the mud that is prevalent throughout the swamp. They will cause the ground to constrict and pull down around the feet of any threats and coat weaponry in mud that quickly hardens to dull weapons and increase their weight.

๐Ÿœ™ Friend or Foe
Along the shore and out further into the bay the spectators that were formerly just observing the city and its people have had a shift of demeanor. Now every boat that tries to leave the docks and every person who approaches the docks or the shore with a boat is met with a very different interaction.

From the 14th to the 17th the merfolk observers suddenly grow aggressive, sinking ships that attempt to exit the gate, harassing city citizens at the dock, and using wind or water magic to force vessels back to the docks. Their sudden turn from largely harmless observers to an attacking force demands action from Queen Adira and she prepares her knights for the prospect of a battle on waters where they will not have the upper hand.

Retaliation from the Didymos knights trying to protect the ships and the docks from the merfolk causes a matched rise in aggression from the sea dwellers. The knights work to load their ships with weapons and the mages enchant the vessels to protect them, fighting back the merfolk attackers to prepare two of the armed fleet ships for battle. During the preparation on the 17th, the merfolk suddenly and unexpectedly retreat from the bay and the waters go still.

Determined to get to the bottom of the strange attacks, Queen Adira puts out a call for those who have been in contact with the merfolk or anyone who might better be able to try and understand the confusing actions of the sea people. She makes plans to send a small fleet through the guarded Sunset Gate to investigate where the rest of the merfolk went and why they launched such a sudden and brief attack on the bay.

On the 18th fish briefly begin schooling up on the shorelines and small, aquatic animals begin beaching themselves or becoming trapped upstream in the estuaries and rivers. The actions of the sea-life in the bay becomes erratic, aggressive, and frenzied as diluted red water begins draining into the estuaries and the bay before dissipating, the ocean water diluting and eventually eradicating any sign of the polluted fresh water. The bay calms down once more and the naval vessel Perspective begins its voyage out the sunset gate.

Armed with a collection of Didymos knights, a group of scholars and mages, and a small group of volunteers, the vessel travels out to Logistykon's reef, heading for the shelf that drops off into the deeper, dark waters of the Glass Sea. Once they pass the gate they are followed by a blue-skinned, spiny merwoman with a spotted porpoise-like tail. She circles the vessel a few times, passing closer and closer near the hull and pushing back on the sails with wind magic before they finally anchor just past Logistykon's reef, only a nautical mile from the shelf. Several other merfolk can be glimpsed watching from just below or with their heads just above the water's surface, surrounding the vessel at a distance that keeps them out of range from most weapons. The blue merwoman approaches the ship, keeping a shorter distance between herself and the vessel, and seems to wait for them to come to her aboard one of the ship's smaller lifeboats.

From where they are anchored, one of the scholars idly comments that the reef looks different and anyone who has observed the reef before will see the skeleton has suffered heavy damage. Cracks now cover the surface of the bones and Logistykon's skull has split down the center.

Hopefully I'm not jumping in too late for this, but, could Felix have attempted to speak to one of the merfolk telepathically prior to the string of attacks on the bay?

Secondly, could he have offered his services in enchanting the boats or would that be restricted to Didymos' military?

The Glass Sea is still and calm now that the wind has died down. The surface is clear and reflects the light, the clouds, and the faces of the people in the ship perfectly while offering a crystal clear view of the reef far below them. It is easy to see how the ocean got its name now that the ship sits quietly anchored. Very few sea creatures beyond the merfolk in the distance can be seen and the reef looks quiet and devoid of the countless colorful fish and sea life that can normally be seen inhabiting the once mighty dragon's skeletal remains.

๐Ÿœ™ The Scholar
Aboard the ship an academic scholar, a specialist on the sea life in and beyond the bay and reef, lingers near the rear of the vessel, his eyes on the wavering sight of the fractured skeleton beneath them. The ship casts a shadow over part of Logistykon's remains, but the majority of the dragon skeleton can be seen, only partially buried on the sea floor.

"It couldn't be the pressure of the depth. It hasn't changed much at all in at least half a century."

๐Ÿœ™ Tรกsi
The merwoman keeps her distance from the ships until there are lifeboats in the water. The distant merfolk are difficult to make out and their features mostly hidden beneath the water, but the one that circled the ship continues to watch the progress of the people coming from the Perspective.

As the smaller boats near her she stops her movement and makes a type of clicking sound. A silver and white porpoise appears from the depths to float beside her, a pair of kelp baskets hanging off of either side of it behind its dorsal fin. She pulls a handful of squirming creatures from the basket and approaches one of the boats. Drifting beside it, she reaches up with one hand full of small, 1-2 inch long eels held firmly in her fingers and holds them out to the nearest person on the smaller boats. She then lifts an eel in her other hand to her mouth and pulls it away, tilting her head to one side and watching them expectantly.

Christine had been amazed to discover the merfolk skeletons when the bay had been emptied earlier in the year, but she was even more surprised when she learned that the merfolk were popping up out of the water to watch the people on shore. She'd smiled, waved, and did her best to keep them around watching her, hoping to get closer to them someday, but now things have changed and she doesn't understand why. Was the city just being watched so the merfolk could learn their weaknesses and then launch an attack? It seems a little unusual, seeing how they can't come up on shore. But then she realizes that perhaps what happened with the river is happening in the ocean too, and the merfolk are becoming aggressive due to something in the water. Maybe it's not really their fault after all. Or maybe there's something dangerous out there that the merfolk are trying to protect the citizens from. Whatever the case, Christine wants to get to the bottom of it.

"Then do you think something came up from the sea floor to damage it?"

"The deep sea, maybe." The scholar responds, staring down into the depths before them. There was something unusual about the way the skeleton had been fractured that had him both curious and uncertain. He gestured to the dark lines just visible over Logistykon's skull and spine with a shake of his head.

"If something had attacked it you would expect to see bones missing or broken inward. They look like they are splitting. Like a dead tree or a fracture in the earth." He had been out to the gate since the bay's waters had returned but at a loss for other explanations, he suggests the improbable.

"An earthquake, perhaps?" Lightning couldn't strike that deep into the sea. It would have stopped at the surface.

"It might be related to the disappearance of fish if it was caused by some natural disaster out here." He turns to look at her before gesturing down at the waters again.

"What do you think?"

She stares in quiet contemplation for a moment before answering.

"Maybe the weight of the skull itself. Without muscles to support it, it cracked from the weight." She likes that answer better than the thought that something huge happened to affect the sea life, but the way things have been going, she bets her guess isn't correct.

Turning to the scholar, she asks, "What's your name?" If there were introductions on the ship, she missed out by being preoccupied with something else.

Well, Billie took off to Didymos to get some fresh sea air and clear her head, so, naturally, volunteering to go out into a dangerous situation out in the bay is the perfect way to do that. She's since swapped her clothes for something less eye-catching as her red coat and much more drag and suitable for bumming around the docks. That she happens to be decent hand with boats sure helps get her signed on.

Which is why she's down in one of the smaller boats when they push off from the Perspective. Tรกsi coming up to the side with a basket of eels doesn't really worry her and she certainly doesn't lean away from them like some people do.

If anything, she catches on pretty fast and reaches out to take the one the merwoman holds out to her. She doesn't eat it right away, no, but she does hold it up close to her mouth and raises her eyebrows, throwing a questioning look right back at her.

This is what she wants, right? For people to eat these?

The merwoman looks pleased when Billie takes the eel from her. She repeats her action a second time before actually putting the eel in her mouth and swallowing. After she does, she continues to watch Billie expectantly, gesturing with an unusual, webbed hand.

Tรกsi opens her mouth after to show that the eel isn't there anymore and pulls her lips over her teeth to conceal them. She gestures with her hand at her mouth and then pulls her hand down along her throat with her palm against her skin before mimicking Billie's gesture of raising her eyebrows.

A 'swallow it whole' deal, huh? Billie isn't surprised. If anything, she seems to find it funny and can't help but claim, "Still not the worst thing I've eaten this month, so sure, why not?"

Not that she expects the merwoman to understand that or for anyone else on the boat to get what that even means. That's the end of her own little personal jokes, though, since she immediately moves on to popping the little eel in her mouth and swallowing it, no chewing involved. It would no doubt taste a lot worse if there was...

Even so, she'll still wrinkle her nose and grimace a little as she goes through with it. Raw fish isn't the worst thing in the world but that's not typically still alive and wriggling at the time.

{ seyra's serenade }
Seyra has always been an important deity to Christine, as the goddess represents growth and healing. Like the rest of Didymos, Christine is preparing for the festivities, and also like them, she's distrustful of little Fortuna and the dragon's possible influence over the queen. But at least she can celebrate the spring and get her garden planted at home. She travels through the market stalls, buying seeds and tiny saplings to take back north into the woods with her. As she walks, purple and silver petals land in her golden hair and she breathes deeply, using this opportunity to think of growth and renewal. So much has been shrouded in darkness lately, that she's grateful for this moment. She and Azoth can be found at the market, out around the city as Christine feeds bread to the winged cats, or helping the children hang garlands above doorways.

Even though he honestly doesn't want to, Strange can at least try to make an appearance for some of the festivities and pretend like everything's back to normal. But feelings on festivities aside, the fact remains that Strange has multiple mouths to feed and he needs to get food in order to do that. So, he's at the marketplace, stocking his basket with all sorts of vegetables that one doesn't have to actually cook.

As he spots Christine buying a tiny tree (well that's odd), he approaches, wry smile on his face, hoping desperately that she's at least slightly gotten over the 'surprise, I have a dragon' revelation.

"You know that thing will take forever to grow," he says, as he nods at the sapling.

Christine looks up with surprise as she hears Strange's voice. She's still a mix of emotions when it comes to him, but she can at least speak to him while they're here celebrating Seyra, can't she?

"Ordinarily, I would agree, but I happen to have a little something I found that will speed up the process. Or at least I'm hoping it will."
kingsroads: (well why don't we do this?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-05-19 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Unsurprisingly, that gets Strange's attention. He perks up, mood shifting a little as Christine mentions the 'little something.' Is it magic? It's totally magic. Gods, he hopes it's magic.

"Is this a little something you can display here or would it be better shown in a more secluded area?"

Says Strange, without even asking if Christine can show whatever this is to him in the first place.

Felix has no particular mission in the city, beyond wandering and trying to make sense of where he's ended up. Wandering in this case meaning 'taking a walk and getting lost' more often than not. The trapping of the festival at least make for pleasant surroundings while he does so, though he has little in the way of coin to buy anything on offer.

As Christine pauses to feed some of the winged cats, a rather ordinary (by comparison) orange and white tabby dashes out into the group, scattering them to the wind.

"I'm sorry about her. I suspect she's stricken with envy," Felix says, from a few steps away, flashing an apologetic smile. Sibyl, flicking her tail, seems pleased with herself.

"Oh!" Christine leans back as there's a flutter of numerous wings around her and many small winged cats disappear into the sky. She frowns down at the interloper, but before she can scold her, the man speaks and she looks over with a shrug and a sigh.

"I suppose they would have been spooked off sooner or later with so many out and about for the festivities." On her shoulder perches a peregrine falcon, who unlike the winged cats wasn't spooked by the sudden appearance of the cat. She shares Christine's demeanor and merely stares down at Sibyl, though if beaks could frown, hers might do so.

...well, that red water might be something he can use in his research. Sento isn't thrilled about the circumstances of whatever's surrounding this, but any and all doubts are quickly shunted to one side for the possibility of research. He does not have the decency to do this in a secluded area; he's going to do this right where anyone might be able to stumble across his poorly-conceived notions of what is and is not appropriate research behavior. That is absolutely an idiot self-proclaimed genius getting entirely too close to the edge of that water with a little bottle, oblivious to whatever sort of oncoming fish-doom this might bring. With the way the sea life has been getting aggressive (or the merpeople have been getting aggressive), well, disaster may strike sooner rather than later.

Not that Sento seems to care. He's not putting anyone else in danger, he's fine, this is going to be just fine. So he's a little too close to the edge of a dangerous body of water, details, details, he'll have his sample of weird red water soon enough, and then he can go back to the inn to get started on further analysis.

Nearby, a small rabbit watches things somewhat anxiously, albeit from a much safer distance. So far, it hasn't yet gone for help, but it's thinking about it.

Having just left a city behind that's been devastated by the red water, Billie isn't pleased to see it making an appearance all the way down here. It almost feels like it chased after her, even if she knows that's impossible. The river flowers into the bay, the water had to go somewhere, that's all.

It doesn't stop her from finding a spot near the shore to watch it warily from.

It also gives her a grand view of Sento wandering directly into danger. Fantastic. Looks like she's going to have to go closer to that crap after all...

"Hey!"

Billie begins making her way down towards where Sento is trying to get his sample. She's swapped her usual red coat for a drabber one that fits in more with the Didymos docks crowd, so at first glance, it'll just look like some dock worker or sailor on leave heading over to yell at him. There's enough truth in that, really.

"Get away from that! It's dangerous!"

[ seyra's serenade โ€” didymos ]

"I already told you to get lost. Go on, go," Billie is telling a gaggle of children for what she thinks is, perhaps, the fourth time. They've been rushing around the marketplace, foisting flower crowns they've made off on people. It's all in good fun, sure, and Billie can vaguely recall doing about the same thing at that age, albeit it was more a reason to get close and pick a pocket butโ€”

Well, they haven't picked hers yet and they don't look like street urchins, so, that's probably not it. They don't relent and the littlest one โ€” a mouse-like kid โ€” takes her turn to hold the flowers out to her. It's harder to say no to the big sad eyes of a rodent, which means Billie is left holding a flower crown made up of various blue and yellow flowers as the children race off again in triumph. Grand. At least they won't clash with her current outfit, one that leans more towards greens and greys to fit into the general dockworker populace.

Perched up on the stall Billie had been cornered at, a black-and-white feathered tern makes short little seabird noises that aren't terribly far off from laughing at her. She rolls her eyes and looks up towards the bird.

"Oh, stuff it."

[ friend or foe โ€” didymos ]

Her time in Didymos inevitably had her taking to the seaside part of the city, ever drawn to the bustle and noise of the ships coming and going. That makes it inevitable that Billie signs on to help with the ships going out to try and find the merfolk, if only because it combines some of her favorite things โ€” being on a boat and, of course, merfolk. Her old crew never had too many dealings with them but the handful they did always left her curious about them and, as ever, curiosity drives her to tag along.

The Perspective already has a regular crew, leaving Billie time to poke around the ship and then, as they pass out of the bay and into the Glass Sea, she can be found taking up a decent spot along the side to watch the waters. It won't be much longer until they reach Logistykon's reef but she's not looking ahead, towards that. Instead, she's looking back behind them, keeping an eye on a lone merperson that looks to be following them.

The first sign that something's off is that Alistair is making a ruckus. Obviously, Strange left the dragon behind as he did some errands and checked on the bay. Bell went with him today, as she honestly needed a break from dragon babysitting. But he left his darling little dragon sleeping, surely he should still be sleeping?

Cautiously, Strange makes his way towards the noise, ready to attack if needed (though honestly hoping and praying that this is all just a misunderstanding or Alistair Tourmaline found a bug or something like that because he really doesn't want to fight something at the moment)...only to spot Billie, in the main living area of his house.

There are a few impressive bookshelves, though they're woefully devoid of books. Noticeably, one of the empty bookshelves has a makeshift wooden target pinned to it: Strange has been working on his throwing. Alistair is chirping happily, trying to get Billie's attention or at least chew on her shoelaces.

"Gods, you scared me," Strange briefly whines. "Am I the only person out of all the awakened who knows how to use a door?"

Billie isn't outright ignoring Alistair. When Strange finds her, she's crouched down, wiggling her fingers at the dragonet like he's a scaly little cat. Gone are her usual clothes, which might throw Strange off for a second or two, as there's no distinct red coat or any sign of a mask or gloves or her usual getup. She doesn't even look armed โ€” look being the key there.

Overall? She looks like a dockworker, drab and dressed for the chill off the bay.

None of that changes that she looks up with an amused sound when Strange whines at her.

"Probably," she says, leaving off playing with Alistair to stand back up properly. "I guess that makes you the boring one."

Seyra's Serenade: Didymos Market

Rey had had a harrowing time in the City of the Free Peoples, and that and the radio silence from the other two owners of the dragons she had quickly scooped back up and fled with after her resurrection has Rey heading back for the city she last saw Ben before he left for Krimnos. She hides her dragonets in a cave by the sea, leaving her tiny but fierce lizard animas to guard them, and takes to the streets.

After everything that happened with the wolf whose life she had taken, Rey had left the sword behind and now walked the streets without a weapon, her skin paler than usual. She needed money for food, and food for the four hungry mouths plus her own. The dragonets had not eaten for the two days she was dead, trapped in a cave, alone and probably afraid. She felt guilty just thinking about what would have happened to them if she had never returned.

Even now as she walks the streets she keeps losing the thread of it when the ghostly specter shows up in the corner of her eye. It's never there when she looks, but it's making her attempts to pick pockets or liberate some food very poor. Finally, she pulls off her necklace at a market stall, the vial only half full and glinting in the sun.

"I just need a basket of fish." It's a terrible deal, but she has nothing else to offer and she never cared for jewelry.

The Huntress

Rey isn't out in the wilderness to claim a bounty. She had heard about the creature stealing the injured prey of hunters and she had come to look for it. She needed to know her surroundings better, and part of that was understanding the wilderness around her. If she was going to teach three hungry young dragonets to hunt for their food, she couldn't risk losing them to a hungry beast.

She waits up in one of the twisted swamp trees, her back to the sturdy trunk and what looks like a small, winged cat on her shoulder. She has a small notebook in one hand, filled with sketches of various creature footprints she had come across so far, and an approximate sketch of the description the hunters had given her. Both of them quietly watch the marshy wet grounds below them for the master hunter of the Swamp of Lost Souls. At the sound of movement, Rey stashes her book and grabs her walking stick, two branches bound against one another with leather wraps at the ends, supporting her weight against the tree with her free hand, ready to try and watch or follow the creature.

What she hears is too small and light, but the hunters had told her it was silent, and she's ready to run if need be. But Amphy, excited by the thrill of something finally happening, blows their cover by chirping excitedly and racing Rey down the tree with her claws digging into the bark. Rey is forced to leap out of the tree and scoop up the over-eager dragonet, throwing her back against the bark and holding her breath after the commotion and noise the two of them just made.

Shura's hardly a charitable person. It's matter of survival as much as anything else. She barely had the time to take care of her own business, let alone getting involved in anyone else's trouble.

But there's something irritating about seeing someone pull out their vial and offer it in trade. Just for a basket of fish? Seriously? Shura pauses for just a moment, and she just nearly passes the fool girl by without a second glance--

And then she stops, slipping through the crowd and just snagging the vial right out of Rey's hand.

"A basket of fish, huh? Nyaha, I'll take it!"

"Hey!" Rey makes a grab for the vial, caught off guard by Shura's sudden appearance. She was using that. The vial wasn't as important to her as the hungry dragonets she was watching over, but it was also the only thing of any value she had.

"Give that back." She'll fight her for it if she has to, and judging by the look on Rey's face she hasn't been having a great streak of luck lately. Fighting Strange to the death would have been enough to shake her on its own, but now she kept seeing that rider out of the corner of her eye and it was starting to feel like the paranoia had followed her from one city to the next.
