Mini-Event: Skywhale + Day of Lefkokรณ

๐Ÿœ™ Bottomโค› Navigation
The Skywhale & Day of Lefkokรณ
๐Ÿœ™ The Skywhale
After fierce retaliation and an increase in city-wide defensive power and measures, it seems as if the orc attacks have, at least for the moment, begun to subside. Along with the lessened threat of orc ambushes, the first storms of winter have died down to a gentle and occasional snow flurry, leaving the world peacefully blanketed in powder snow and a calm stillness. The City of the Free Peoples take this time to celebrate the final repairs of the airship, the Skywhale. With sail balloon once more filled and the engines working hard to keep the air within it warm, easier and safer travel is once more available.

The Skywhale leaves once a day in the early morning to head for Didymos, and today is its maiden voyage since the repairs. Thalassa has changed greatly in the last century, blossoming into a massive port and military city, with resources and opportunities unavailable in the more eclectic Cty of the Free Peoples. Restless legs may find their chance to stretch to a new experience. Sail the skies aboard the Skywhale and see Thalassa's grand transformation to Didymos for yourself. Catch the voyage back before nightfall, or remain in Didymos until the ship's return the following day. There is plenty to see and do in the city by the sea. You can even see Logistykon's reef from aboard the Skywhale's deck as it swings around to dock. It is a grim but beautiful sight in the clear blue waters.

While the threat of fire and orc ambush has diminished greatly, the City of the Free Peoples is filled with a sense of unease and discomfort as repairs on the city and attempts to put lives back together continue. Murmurs of discontent slip through the city streets, along with rumors that this is all Lykos' fault or accusations that the Captain might be hiding something. For every murmur of distrust, however, there are counters of the heroics and quick action that helped keep the city strong and beat the orcs back.

There has still been no word from Krimnos or the airship, Valiant, that usually hails from the cliff city daily. Messengers have not made their wing from the city and those sent to the cliffs have not returned. It's not unusual for this time of year, but the absence is felt keenly by traveling merchants who need to get their wares to or from the city. A journey by horse or on foot would be risky, but the potential rewards for escorting a company up to the cliffs could prove significant.

๐Ÿœ™ Day of Lefkokรณ
No matter what city you find yourself in, the dawn of the 17th sees a change in mood and atmosphere across Idan. Snow has stopped falling and the sky is a bright, clear blue. The weather warms enough to cause water to drip softly from the icicles hanging off every awning and outcrop. Decorations of magical or crafted snowflake art and blue ice flames line city streets and building windows, and jovial merriment spills out into the streets. A sweet wine made from frostberries, warm honey-mead, and spiced apple drinks are offered in taverns, inns, and small shops or homes, a free offering to be had with sweet or spiced cheeses and spiced or candied nuts and fruits. It's a celebration that is far from unfamiliar, one that has been celebrated for centuries across Idan's towns and cities, though the methods and particulars of the celebration have always varied from place to place and people to people.

December is the month of the White Raven, and in particular, this day is a day to honor him. Lefkokรณ, the deity of dance, freedom, madness, and cunning sits at the head of the cause of these festivities and his domains are the focus of the celebrations. Today is a day of dance, drinking, and games of skill and chance. A day to test your bluffing skills, show off, and take deep joy and pride in the liberties and opportunities available to all. Few work on this day, beyond the essentials, and everyone who is able to takes part in this moment of freedom and relaxed expectations or responsibilities.

The cities are alive with music and dancing, and the taverns are a swirl of chaos amidst high stake games of cunning and chance. Clever minds clash over riddles, old and new, and as the day progresses a lack of sobriety becomes increasingly evident in the streets and establishments alike.

As the sun reaches the highest point in the sky and the shadows dwindle to near nothingness, the aviaries of all three cities release the newest flock of rare juvenile snow ravens to their freedom, letting them take wing to the skies for their first ever flights. The flocks of snow ravens, the most coveted of magic familiars, fly off to the wildlands after practicing their acrobatic feats and visiting various areas of the city in search of food to give them energy for the journey ahead. Once they take their leave of the city, many begin to seek out hidden trinkets, magical herbs, and small, rare items across Idan with a precise and dedicated focus.

Those who honor Lefkokรณ by celebrating in his name may be visited by his rare and clever emissaries later in the month with an offering of thanks from Lefkokรณ himself.

๐Ÿœ™ A Warning.
By the 18th the orc camp has been abandoned, the animals freed and the orcs, whatever was left of them, appear to have fled. Retreat is unusual, even more so for them to cut their creatures loose and flee without triumph or trophy, but this is something different. Many of the weapons, trinkets, and armors coveted by the warring orcs have been left behind, and the fires trampled and stamped out with apparent urgency. Tracks lead to the south a few miles and then vanish into snow in the direction of Lake Atรฉleio. It and the land south and west of it are consumed in a blizzard blown over from the sea, and tracking beyond that point becomes nearly impossible, though by this point it is assumed the Orcs have retreated to Spear Valley. Whether or not they will return is unclear.

Those in the City of the Free Peoples on the 18th will receive another message, this one from a less mysterious source, addressing the coming dangers.

Though the attacks have set preparations back a few weeks I would like to quell any worries. The Long Night approaches, but you are a city of strong, brave folk. The threats on the horizon will not be the end of this city any more than these raucous attacks have been.

Supplies can be claimed from the defender's camp for any struggling to make the necessary preparations. Those who have lost their homes will be provided shelter and supplies. When the Long Night comes, keep your children indoors, your fires stoked, and your buildings shuttered. There is nothing to fear. Your defenders will keep you safe.
-Captain Lykos

Several hours later a second and then a third message is received across all kingdoms. It comes only to the couriers of the awakened. The first comes as an audio message: A dull scraping sound followed by the click and whine of metal dragging across stone and the dripping of thick, viscous liquid somewhere distant. It ends abruptly and a simple thought message, short and uncomfortable, follows it.

The message has no signature.

Between their shared unfamiliarity with the dance and their inebriation, the fact that they weren't bumping into each other and the other couples is impressive. Shura doesn't mind the near-misses and the times he narrowly misses stepping on her toes, only laughing. She isn't doing much better, saved by her natural grace and rhythm and her partner's guidance. Stumbling around like this is fun in its own way.

"You don't know what you're doin', do you?" She says, still grinning even after her nearly steps on her toes again. The dance couldn't be that new, not if everyone else knew the steps just fine. Maybe it was a regional thing, but maybe she had more in common with this man than she thought. It was likely the former, but it was still possible that he was like her. She'd keep an eye out for other signs.
kingsroads: (well why don't we do this?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-12-29 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Absolutely not," Strange laughs, with a little grin. Because he doesn't. He sure as hell doesn't. He only has a vague idea of what he's doing and has even less of a vague idea of how to do the dance. Still, he's got no idea if this dance is well-known or not: he might as well give a half-assed attempt at an explanation.

"I'm not from here," he explains, with a little shrug. "And aside from that, my style is a little...out of date." He can't help but smile at that, like he's privy to an inside joke. Over a hundred years out of date but he's sure as hell not going to tell Shura that. Unless...maybe she was like him?

[personal profile] exaomori 2018-12-29 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
A hop here, a turn there. It isn't a difficult dance, but it isn't easy to pick up on the fly like this.

"What, have you been asleep in the woods for the last hundred years?" She asks playfully. It's an odd question, but it's something she can blow off as quirky or drunk if pressed. She knew she wasn't the only only, but just how many of them were there? It was only natural to try and seek out allies in this situation. This has nothing to do with the heartache Shura's been desperately trying to ignore since she realized just how much she had lost on waking up from death.
kingsroads: (small little smiles)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-12-29 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps," Strange teases, with a wry little 'I know something you don't know' sort of grin. What an oddly specific time frame to ask about...perhaps she was like him? There was only one way to find out: more questions, hidden behind jibes and jokes.

"Though actually? It was a battlefield. I took a hundred year nap there, woke up around a month ago, and discovered that my fashion was terribly out of date."

He continues the dance, leading Shura through hops and turns. There's one complicated part where he has to spin her: that one almost causes Strange to wipe out, but he manages to keep his footing.

If he steps on her toes, Shura's going to demand he buy her a drink. Really, she's probably going to try and weasel one out of him, anyway, but that's later.

"A hundred year nap on a battlefield? Nyaha, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you died!" A quick hop-hop, and Shura trips a little on his feet. She recovers quickly for the next step. "But that shouldn't be possible, wakin' up after all those years in one piece and dressed in a new shirt!"
kingsroads: (YAY RASH DECISIONS!!!)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-12-30 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That's enough to prove to Strange that Shura was like him, that she died and came back as well. He pulls her in, ostensibly to continue the dance.

"I never said the shirt was new," he whispers, close into Shura's ear. All he did was make a joke about out of date fashion, not say any details of the new shirt he woke up in. The joke could have easily been about the clothes he died in, not the mysterious new tunic he had. He's not even bothering to conceal the excitement in his voice as he whispers, "You died as well, didn't you."

And before Shura can say anything else, Strange moves her into a spin to finish off the song: the music starts to die down as the rest of the couples finish the dance.

He's too giddy when he asks that. But he understood what she was asking, however indirectly. Another one--his animas must be somewhere else, either hidden under one of the tables like her Shishi or somewhere safe and out of the way. Really, though, what a way to be dramatic, spinning her before she can get a word out in reply. Her heart was already beating fast from the dancing, but it's hard to get it to settle out now. He wasn't the first she had met like her, but the other meetings had been more subdued and she had been entirely sober on those occasions.

The last notes of the song are a distant sound in her ears; she's ready to pull away from the dancing and music for a moment. "After all that, I'm thirsty~"

Time to escape from the crowd to talk for a moment, compare stories.
kingsroads: (small cheeky little smile)

"In that case, let me get you a drink," Strange says, with a little nod. Preferably an alcoholic one. This place is nice and he can picture all the conversation he'll have with Shura...but it would be best with alcohol.

And so, he gestures for Shura to follow him as Strange starts to leave the dance floor and heads towards a side table, stocked full of bottles, glasses, and all sorts of materials perfect for getting sloshed.
exaomori: (๐Ÿ 19)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-02 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Those drinks were probably brought out to be shared amongst the revelers. Shura can't recognize a single bottle by sight alone, so she'll just grab the nearest green bottle that looks full. She'll share it with Strange, so she wasn't breaking any rules, right? It'll be up to Strange to grab a couple glasses for them as Shura will be walking off with the bottle without a second glance.

"I wonder~ There's got to be a nice, quiet spot to drink somewhere around here." Even if it has to be her room at the inn, Shura can find somewhere. The celebratory atmosphere gave them a lot of leeway, and a drunk man and woman just seen dancing might be given extra privacy if they snuck down an alley. Down that way? Yes, a spot empty save for a few overturned crates. "How lucky~! We don't have to fight any thugs for some privacy ♥"

Well, not yet, at least.
kingsroads: (smirky asshole)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Strange does grab a couple of glasses. And once she mentions the idea of a nice, quiet, spot, Strange fortunately picks up on the real meaning and any intended innuendo. After all, it's a day of drinking and dancing, people should expect a drunk couple grabbing a bottle and some glasses to go off and enjoy some privacy.

Of course, most people didn't talk about being dead but hey, special circumstances. "Lead the way," Strange grins, with a nod towards the alleyway.

As they enter the alleyway, a hare follows, not far behind. She darts in between legs and around any broken bottles, darting ahead to stop and rest near the crates. Strange's expression brightens as soon as he spots her and quickly explains, "You don't need to worry about her, the hare is mine. Her name's Bell."

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
The feel of something soft brushing against her ankle for the barest second startle Shura, and she expects to see a cat darting by. But Strange's claim on the hare settles her enough. His animas? Possibly.

"It must be convenient, bein' that small." Unlike Shishi, who was currently sleeping under one of the tables. Shura expects he'll track her down once he wakes up, but she won't worry about that for now, taking a seat on a crate and reaching for the glasses Strange grabbed. She'll pour for both of them, the motion practice and more elegant than what might be expected of someone in her state of half-dress. Whatever the liquor is, it's dark and has a piney smell to it. Shura can only hope it's as potent as it looks.
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-04 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Strange takes a seat as well. When he does so, the hare hops up into his lap. One hand goes to petting her while the other hand takes one of the glasses that Shura poured. The liquor...honestly, smells a little like a forest, but Strange doesn't mind. He takes a tentative sip, then screws up his face in an interesting expression. It tastes good and thankfully is strong, but he didn't expect it to actually taste a little like pine needles as well.

"So, where shall we start?" Because they need plenty of conversation to get through all the craziness that happened to both of them. "Do you wish to talk about your life pre-revival or simply skip forward to that bit?"
exaomori: (๐Ÿ 2)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-05 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
"There isn't much to talk about before my life before~" The entire spy thing made her life much less fun to talk about, let alone the fact that she really didn't want to think about the things that no longer were in her life.

"But as for comin' back--well, I woke up outside of the City of the Free Peoples. It's a mouthful of a name, ain't it? Atrรณmitos is much easier to say."

Shura pulls her legs up underneath her, getting comfortable as she can on a wooden crate in a cold alley. The best way to fight off the cold was to take a long drink of the liquor. It reminds her faintly of her childhood home.
kingsroads: (maybe we can talk about other things?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-07 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
"I did as well," Strange nods. "And you're right on the name. You'd think they would have come up with an abbreviation by now."

City of the Free People? That's four words too many for a city name: best to find a way to condense it somewhat. Strange reaches up to pull something out of his shirt. It's the vial of blue liquid that everyone woke up with: Strange has his attached to a chain as a necklace. "Did you wake up with one of these as well?"
exaomori: (๐Ÿ 5)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-07 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
"The People's City or somethin', at least." Though the city didn't belong to the people, but that wasn't the point. It was a mouthful and a nuisance!

Shura recognizes the little vial, nodding when Strange shows pulls his out to show. She tugs at the scarf she's wearing, raising the fabric up enough to show the bottom of the vial before readjusting the material.

"And you have one of those devices, too." This isn't a question. "Whoever brought us back gave us some nice presents, didn't they~" And this isn't a compliment.
kingsroads: (maybe staring makes it work)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-07 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"They did," Strange agrees, with a little frown. The vial, the device, the animas...whoever brought them back had loaded on the presents, in a way that was more than a little suspicious.

"Perhaps they didn't want us to be lonely?" Strange teases, even though he knows that isn't the right answer. But what the hell else could it be? What's the point of giving everyone a device that lets them talk to other people, if they didn't want the awakened to talk to other people?
exaomori: (๐Ÿ 10)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-08 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"If they didn't want us to be lonely, then maybe they shoulda given us their name, huh?" A name and a reason for being brought to life. If whoever did this could afford to drop all these presents on them, surely they could afford to drop a little extra hint as to just why they ought to be given so many pretty things. Shura was hardly a saint in her last life; anyone who brought her back had either bad luck or bad intentions.

A low rumbling interrupts them. It's Shishi, having realized that Shura was no longer dancing and must now be free to entertain him, obviously. He chuffs as he comes close, carefully padding his way around anything that might cut his paws and nuzzling Shura's thigh. He doesn't seem to notice or care about Strange. "Quit that, I told you to stay back there."
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-09 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"A valid point," he responds, with a little grin. Strange has his theories, of course: his obsessive mind is planted firmly on the dragons. But it would be nice just to confirm that and have his ideas be validated.

And then a fuckin lion shows up? Strange can't help but look on in surprise as Shishi walks into the alleyway. Bell also sniffs the air in interest, though she soon goes right back to snuggling up to Strange, waiting for the man to start petting her.

"How interesting," he muses. "A hare would make sense. They're portable animals and can easily be passed off as pets. But you were stuck with a lion?" That's bonkers.
exaomori: (๐Ÿ 27)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-10 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Stuck with a lion, indeed. "He eats too much. Couldn't they have made it where I didn't have to feed him? Idiot can't hunt for himself, so I'm stuck with the bill."

Her nose wrinkles as Shishi rubs his face against her leg one last time before deciding that this approach wasn't getting him the attention he wanted, so he raises himself up with one paw on the crate, the other paw on her thigh to better ram his fuzzy head into Shura's chest. He clearly doesn't seem to care about how much weight he's putting on Shura's leg. Shura wraps her arm around his neck. Someone who couldn't read the irritation in her face might think it affectionate, but really, Shura was just putting him in a headlock to stop him from trying to climb up in her lap.
kingsroads: (small cheeky little smile)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-10 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently, rabbits can look smug. Because hot damn does Bell look so smug as she preens and poses before hopping into Strange's lap. That's right, she's better than a lion, she can actually get food herself and can fit in a lap.

Strange laughs a little, equally at Shura's exasperation, Shishi's want of affection, and Bell's preening. He continues to give Bell some ear scratches as he talks.

"I could attempt a transfiguration spell to change him into something more portable, but I've no idea how that might work on creatures like ours." And Strange suspects it's a bad idea to change someone's possible soul animal into something else. Sorry Shura, you're stuck with a lion.
exaomori: <user name=worldlyafflictions> (๐Ÿ 49)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-11 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Who cares about the smug bunny? Shishi doesn't. Shishi only cares about whether or not he has Shura's attention. This isn't the most ideal situation, but any attention is good attention, so he'll be satisfied like this for the moment, letting out a low rumbling sound.

"Messing with that kind of thing probably ain't a good idea." Shura shares Strange's suspicion about messing with Shishi's composition. He was bad enough as he was, she didn't need him to be messed up somehow or other. "It isn't like we've confirmed exactly what they are, anyway." Thanks for the thought, though!!
kingsroads: (well why don't we do this?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-12 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
"I have an idea as to what they are," Strange explains. His tone's suddenly a bit more chipper and a bit more interested. This is shifting into talks about magical theory: that's his bread and butter. He's a big ol'nerd, knows this stuff fairly well, and will happily talk about it until the cows come home.

"Have you heard of the term 'animas'? It's theoretical, so don't worry if you haven't."
exaomori: (๐Ÿ 7)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-14 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh gods, not this kind of man. The man who has ideas and likes the sound of his own voice. He may mean well, but Shura had her fair share of superiors with that kind of personality. She downs the rest of her glass, reaching for the liquor bottle to refill their glasses as she replies.

"Animas? Once or twice." It wasn't the kind of thing her master had been interested in and the familiars her master had given her did the job well enough. She mostly only overheard people talking about it.
kingsroads: (small cheeky little smile)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2019-01-15 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"An animas is a familiar, but one that's created from the soul." The more he talks, the more it's obvious that Strange is a big ol'magical nerd. He leans forward, gesturing with his hands as he talks, obviously interested and willing to chat about this thing for as long as Shura wants.

"The general consensus is that it's purely hypothetical. But considering these things and the means of their creation? I think it's not hypothetical at all."
exaomori: <user name=worldlyafflictions> (๐Ÿ 49)

[personal profile] exaomori 2019-01-16 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"At this point, I'm willin' to think that a lot of things are more than just hypothetical." Shura glances at her cup, then at Shishi. Could lions drink alcohol? Should they? It's a question for another day since she doesn't have anything to pour the liquor into for him to drink out of, and she isn't going to give up her glass so soon.
