"I don't know why." That's not an answer she can give him. She's not the one who can forgive him--or offer the redemption he's seeking. Surely he must be, if he's still standing... even if he doesn't openly admit to it. "None of us know why we've been brought back."

Speaking of these things leaves her feeling exhausted. There's a specific reason she doesn't dwell on past mistakes, or her own deaths.

Turning away, she gazes out across the bay, to the merfolk watching them still. They're not teasing and having fun again, as if attuned to the upset of their discussion.

"Why are you walking now, standing, talking, if what you want doesn't matter?" There's a sharper note to her tone as she looks at him again. "We've all lost people--" And I would trade for any one of mine in an instant "--but you're here, with two of your family still living. And yet you're sulking over what you want and don't want.

"Do you intend on staring off into the waters for the rest of the time you live?"
