[ He turns his attention from the stream back to Alucard, chuckling as he lets himself be led. ]
Hard to imagine you risking getting your clothes dirty.
[ Never mind that it was Alucard's idea to come here. It's still hard to imagine. It takes a little while for his eyes (eyes, since Alucard gets so fussy about him wearing the eyepatch in the castle.) to adjust to the darkness, and he lets Alucard lead him through the brief blindness. ] How far does it go?
Do you think I only lived in the library as a child, Trevor?
[The entrance is a grand thing, overdramatic stalagmites and stalactites greeting them. There are some that are triple Trevor's size, others shorter than Alucard. In the light of the cave, they are all pale, but there is a shine to each and every one of them.]
It goes on for about five miles. I learned how to map things properly here and uh. Once, my father and I were trapped by the sun's rays for a full day.
[ It's odd, hearing of Dracula's time as a half-decent father. A vampir from the time of Leon Belmont, playing in caves with his son. It's absurd to think about. But he listens, and he nods, and he waits a little while before replying. He'd rather not say something fucked up about Dracula without thinking about it. It's a delicate subject. ]
So you didn't live in the library, but you did do cartography for fun. Figures.
[ It doesn’t look any different to the other routes, in truth, but he likes to pretend he has some reason for picking any one of the paths over the others. ]
Let me guess - you could hold onto the stalactites to pull yourself down if you needed to, used them to practice?
[Left it is. Alucard's actually pleased Trevor chose left, because the best parts of the cave are on that side. But going further in means that there is a need for light, and Alucard murmurs something.
In front of them, a little orb of soft yellow light shines, illuminating the path ahead and behind them. It's a little trick Alucard used to need when he was exploring, and it's important now for date purposes.
It also illuminates the look of real surprise on Alucard's face at Trevor.]
I....yes. Exactly that. I would float over to the tallest one and pull myself down. It helped me to learn to pace myself in descending.
Thought so. [ He looks over Alucard's surprised expression, blinking in the fresh new light, then shrugs. ] Kids like climbing shit. Figured it works the same in reverse if you start off floating.
[ He looks about the cave, checking the ground so that he can walk without risking tripping, then back to Alucard. ]
Where does this one lead? Or do I have to wait and be surprised?
[ He chuckles, and in place of a verbal answer he scoops Alucard up, putting him onto his shoulder. He gives him a moment to get comfortable and then tilts his head, leaning it against Alucard's thigh. ]
Keep the light around. I don't want to walk into a stalagmite and hit you with it. Not if you're going to use it to climb down.
[The light rises with Alucard, although it doesn't quite follow him. Instead, it stays hovering above the same spot it was originally on. There's an increase of brightness, and that's all there is.]
I can do that.
[Alucard doesn't fuss as Trevor scoops him up either. He was going to float, but there's a joy in just being picked up and placed where he ought to be. Once Trevor's head is leaned against him, what else can Alucard do but put a hand in Trevor's hair and stroke through it as gently as possible. His hands move carefully, and then he leans over to plant a kiss atop Trevor's head.]
[ He sighs contentedly as Alucard strokes through his hair. It's- nice. Even if he doesn't quite understand why Alucard brought him here and what he's expected to do (going places and doing things because they're just nice to do? sounds fake). ]
Didn't do a whole lot of exploring when I was a kid. Order set a pretty strict schedule. Always had someplace to be, and it wasn't ever 'a cave somewhere'.
You probably weren't anywhere near good caves to explore anyway.
[His hand doesn't still as they move forward through the cave, although Alucard can't stare down stupidly at his Belmont. His eyes remain ahead, blessing the familiarity of the scene. 100 years on, and caves don't change. The paths through them don't change, one that they're on being worn smooth by so many explorers before.
The deeper in they go, the higher the ceiling becomes, until another cavern opens up entirely. Above, above is so high up that it might as well be a dark night sky, and there is a shimmer to the ceiling that genuinely suggests it. This place, this part of the cave, it's all quartz, and so the ceiling flickers and shimmers as the light reflects off of it.
Alucard smiles at the familiarity, and he kisses Trevor again.]
We had caves! [ He sounds a little defensive about that. Only a little. ] Most of them were just in the depths of the old hold. And-
[ -and then he does look up. It can’t be the night sky - it was barely noon when they came into the caves, and time doesn’t fly that much. On second look, the light up there doesn’t quite flicker like stars. Minerals of some sort. ]
[It's said with a soft, warm laugh. Then Alucard does the smart thing and shuts up entirely, his eyes fixed not on the ceiling but on Trevor. His face is exactly what Alucard wanted out of all of this. The wonder, the surprise, and there's more to come.
But Alucard isn't going to rush sharing one of his favorite places in the world. His fingers just keep carding through Trevor's hair, and it'd be no lie to say the vampire's face is absolutely besotted.]
[ The defensiveness is gone, the argument distracted and distant. Trevor himself is mostly gone, staring up at the ceiling. It’s- fuck. Amazing. For a few moments, he can barely remember that Alucard is on his shoulder, hand in his hair. ]
[Alucard's hands go still, mostly because he needs them to do something else. There's a soft pat to the top of Trevor's head, and Alucard points him towards a large pillar - a stalactite and stalagmite that have merged into one.]
Head over there.
[There's art on the pillar. Old art, the kind of thing made from smeared ash and hard determination. There's a pack of bears there, large and running towards some unsketched destination.]
[ It's hard, to tear his gaze from the ceiling. He likes to think himself better than getting this distracted just because something looks neat. More practical. But the ceiling shimmers like water and he can't quite bring himself to look away. It's only when Alucard's hands stop moving through his hair that he moves, and only then because right now he feels the loss so keenly that he can feel a chill at the base of his spine.
He sits, holding Alucard steady as he descends, to be at eye level with the art. And- it's not as awe-inspiring as the almost-stars above them, but it's still heavy with history. With things older than they are. Older than Alucard's father. Older than the dragons, maybe. ]
Good cave. [ He repeats, for lack of any other words to say. ]
There's drawings like this everywhere in the cavern. [The explanation is soft, Alucard's focus on being on Trevor and Trevor alone.]
Those that passed through here set all of their art beneath a nighttime sky. There's other columns that are made to look like trees, with owls on them. There's a family of goblins in the far back, all asleep.
[His hands go back to Trevor's hair finally. Alucard can't know how badly the touch is wanted, but he knows how badly he wants to keep touching. And touching. Everything about Trevor makes him want to hold on tight, because everything now is so damn ephemeral.]
[ He leans into the touch, sighing contentedly. It’s perfect. All of this is. Coming back was worth it, almost, for this one moment. He lifts Alucard from his shoulder, pulling him into his lap instead ]
I’m glad we’re here. For now, all that bullshit might just be worth it.
[It is worth it, isn't it? Being undead and having a moment like this. They've gotten so many moments since figuring this romance nonsense out.
It's that thought that has Alucard straining upward towards Trevor's face. A lap is comfy, yes, but this is more important. One hand reaches up to brush over Trevor's cheek, and then all he can do is kiss the Belmont.
He's soft. Slow. Chaste but looking for permission to deepen the embrace.]

[Alucard laughs gently, and then he looks up.]
I got stuck on the ceiling once or twice. I learned how to come down by myself thanks to tis place.
[Ahead though, there is a three forked path. Alucard seems well aware of it, but his focuse turns to Trevor.]
Left, right, or center? Your pick.

It's a surprise. But may I sit on your shoulder for a bit?
